Hawaii's Secret Season

After the holiday crowds have left, but before the spring break crowds descend, comes a time savvy travelers call Hawaii’s secret season. Late winter and early spring boast beach-perfect weather, affordable fares, and some truly memorable seasonal attractions:

• Whale Watching: January through April, humpback whales migrate from the cool waters of the North Pacific to the warmer waters of Kona and Maui to feed, mate, and raise their young. Ride a catamaran and learn from naturalists as you witness whales in their marine habitat.

• Prince Kuhio Celebration of the Arts: Honor the birthday and birthplace of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, one of Hawaii’s most beloved monarchs. Held in Poipu (Kauai) March 20 – 28, free events include Native Hawaiian cultural demonstrations and ukulele lessons.

• Honolulu Family Festival: Bring the kids to this free four-day festival March 25 -28 and enjoy the thrill of rides, live entertainment, games, food booths, and more.

• Hula Festival: The weeklong festivities of the annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival begin April 4. See the finest hula halaus (schools) perform both kahiko (ancient) and auwana (contemporary) hula in a competition that draws thousands to Hilo (Big Island) every year.

• Kokua Festival: Celebrate Earth Day on Oahu (April 23-24) with Hawaii’s own Jack Johnson, Jake Shimabukuro and Anuhea along with Ziggy Marley and Taj Mahal. Groove to the beat of eclectic live music, try local food, and get kids involved in interactive games and crafts.

• Kona Brewers Festival: Try more than 70 beers from 35 breweries and delectable food from 25 restaurants during this Big Island 15th annual celebration, on tap for March 13. The multi-day event features live music, fire dancers, hula, a beer and food pairing dinner, charity golf tournament, and a Walk/Run for Hops.
